Scientific Name:   Citrus aurantium var. amara

Synonyms: C. vulgaris, C. bigaradia, seville orange, sour orange bigarade

Plant Parts Used:  Leaves, blossoms, and rind

Extraction Method:  Cold expression from the outer peel of almost ripe fruit.

Physical Characteristics: Dark yellow or brownish yellow mobile liquid

Aroma:  Fresh dry, almost floral odor with a rich sweet undertone.

Main Constituents: Over 90 per cent monoterpenes:  mainly limonene, myrcene, camphene, pinene, ocimene, cymene, and small amounts of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones.

Blends With: Orange bitter essential oil blends well with cinnamon, coriander, clove, frankincense, jasmine and lavender. Orange bitter esential oil should not be used if the area of application will be exposed to sunlight for 24 hours due to its phototoxicity.

Safety Precautions:  Phototoxic:  Otherwise generally non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing.   Limonene has been reported to cause contact dermatitis in some individuals.
